We are a small specialty restaurant of okonomiyaki, known as Japanese savory pancake or Japanese Pizza. Okonomiyaki has been a popular soul food of the Japanese since introduced in Edo Era, 17th-19th Century Japan. Now it is also becoming quite popular among foreign travelers visiting Japan. Most okonomiyaki restaurants with grill tables let the guests cook their own food; however, at KYOYA our Owner Chef will come to your table and cook everything for you. So, just relax, have some Sake, cold beer, or soft drinks, and wait until the delicious food is ready! Located in Nihonbashi Kakigara-cho, we are only a few minutes walk from Suitengumae Subway Station of Hanzomon Line and just a few blocks from Royal Park Hotel. Prior reservation is recommended since we have only four tables serving up to 12 persons.
Our name KYOYA is derived from a famous Kabuki actor, the late-Jakuemon Nakamura Ⅳ who played female roles on stage. Attracted by the cultures and traditions of old Tokyo, our Owner Chef Minoru Takahashi, in his teens, found a backstage staff job at the Kabukiza Theater, where he met Jakuemon Ⅳ and became his personal assistant. In 1990, after some years of a hotel business career, Minoru decided to open a restaurant where guests may enjoy their meals along with a touch of good old Japan. Jakuemon Ⅳ was kind enough to grant Minoru to name the cozy little restaurant KYOYA - the stage family name of the Jakuemon Nakamura family passed down for generations. Come and check at the most current Kabuki Play Posters and our monthly Kabuki Stage miniature display handmade by Minoru.
Okonomiyaki contains batter, shredded cabbage, and various ingredients, and is generally eaten with sweet fruity brown sauce called Okonomiyaki Sauce. At KYOYA, we offer special okonomiyaki options with different flavors-Soy Sauce, Salt, or Okonomiyaki Sauce. In Tokyo, there is liquid okonomiyaki called Monja or Mojiyaki. KYOYA offers a unique type of Monja called Mojiyaki with Minoru’s cooking performance and history talks (in Japanese). A British and American couple recently visited us loved it and said that “it’s a crispy savory delicacy that you find nowhere else in Japan”. If you understand Japanese, enjoy the finger food along with Minoru’s Mojiyaki history talks. If you don’t, ask his wife to translate. She also has a hotel business background and speaks Japanese, French and English.
